10th ANNIVERSARY OF BBK BANKU FUNDAZIOA: POLLUTION PODS AND WATERLICHT

To commemorate its 10th anniversary as a banking foundation, BBK Banku Fundazioa has developed a special programme for 2025, selecting Artingenium as its strategic partner for the production and management of two art installations that combine art, technology and environmental awareness: Pollution Pods, by Michael Pinsky, and Waterlicht, by Daan Roosegaarde.

After travelling through several international capitals, both projects arrive in Bizkaia thanks to BBK Fundazioa, which thus reinforces its commitment to environmental sustainability and the fight against climate change, as emphasized by Nora Sarasola, Director of Social Action at BBK:

As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we invite all citizens to join us in reflecting on the future we are creating together and the responsibility we share in confronting climate change. To achieve this, there is nothing more powerful than art—capable of transforming an environmental issue into
an emotional experience with the potential to spark social change.

POLLUTION PODS by MICHAEL PINSKY

Michael Pinsky’s installation consists of five interconnected geodesic domes that recreate the air-
pollution levels of different cities around the world—ranging from the clean atmosphere of Norway to the pollution of London, New Delhi, Beijing, or São Paulo. The installation is part of the Climart
research project and aims to foster a deeper understanding of environmental challenges and their impact on our daily lives through art.

By altering temperature, humidity, smells, and concentrations of ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, and carbon monoxide, visitors can experience firsthand the effects of air pollution.

Pollution Pods was open for visitors at Herriko Plaza in Barakaldo between June 14 th and 22 nd , and at Klima Urdaibai from July 3 rd to August 31 st 2025.

WATERLICHT by DAAN ROOSEGAARDE

Waterlicht, by Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde, transforms the sky into an ocean of blue light, exploring both the power and the poetry of water. Using LEDs, optical lenses, and an advanced programming system, the artwork creates a “virtual flood” that allows visitors to visualize how water levels could rise if no action is taken against climate change.

Waterlicht turns the sky into a shifting liquid surface, shaped by wind and rain. Under this blue luminous canopy, the public is immersed in a collective experience that highlights the importance of innovation in water management and the far-reaching impact of climate change.

Waterlicht was open for visitors to experience outside Bilbao’s Itsasmuseum between the 18 th and the 20 th of September 2025.
